Diavata
Diavata is a suburb and former municipality in the Thessaloniki regional unit, Greece. Situated approximately 10 kilometers northwest of the city of Thessaloniki, it is part of the municipality of Delta.
Historically, the area was populated by refugees following the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s. This influx of population significantly shaped the demographics and cultural identity of Diavata.
The area is largely characterized by industrial and agricultural activities. Its proximity to Thessaloniki makes it a strategically important location for logistics and warehousing.
Diavata is also known for its psychiatric hospital, the Psychiatric Hospital of Thessaloniki, which is one of the largest mental health facilities in the region. This institution plays a significant role in the community, providing mental healthcare services and research.
The name "Diavata" likely derives from the Greek word "διάβαση" (diávasi), meaning "crossing" or "passage," possibly referencing a historical or geographical feature of the area.
