Jericho

Jericho is a city located in the Palestinian Territories, near the Jordan River in the West Bank. It is widely considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with archaeological evidence indicating human settlement as far back as the 10th millennium BCE.

History and Archaeology:

Jericho's long history is marked by successive layers of settlement, destruction, and rebuilding. Archaeological excavations have revealed the remains of a Neolithic settlement, including a fortified wall and tower dating back to around 8000 BCE. These structures are considered to be some of the earliest examples of large-scale construction.

The city is also mentioned in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) as the first city conquered by the Israelites after their crossing of the Jordan River under the leadership of Joshua. The biblical account describes the miraculous collapse of Jericho's walls.

Jericho holds religious significance for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In Judaism, it is a key city in the narratives of the Israelite conquest of Canaan. In Christianity, it is associated with the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the nearby Jordan River, and with several miracles performed by Jesus. In Islam, it is considered a historical city with connections to the prophets.

Modern Jericho:

Today, Jericho is administered by the Palestinian National Authority. It is a significant urban center with a growing population and a developing infrastructure. The city continues to attract tourists and pilgrims from around the world.
