James Martin (Queensland politician)
James Martin (Queensland politician) was an Australian politician who served as Premier of Queensland on two separate occasions.
Born in County Tyrone, Ireland, Martin emigrated to New South Wales in 1855 and later moved to Queensland. He was called to the bar in 1860 and established a successful legal practice.
Martin entered Queensland colonial politics in 1863, representing the electorate of Eastern Downs in the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was a prominent figure in the conservative faction.
He first served as Premier of Queensland from 1866 to 1867. During this time, his government focused on economic development and infrastructure projects. He formed a ministry with Arthur Macalister.
His second term as Premier was from 1868 to 1870. Again, economic growth and infrastructure were key priorities. His second premiership was marked by political instability and he was ultimately defeated in a vote of no confidence.
Following his premiership, Martin continued to serve in the Legislative Assembly until his retirement in 1873. He remained active in legal circles and public life. He was later appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
James Martin played a significant role in the early political development of Queensland.
