Kratt (ballet)

Kratt is a full-length ballet in four acts and nine scenes, with music by Estonian composer Eduard Tubin. It is considered one of the most important works in Estonian ballet. The ballet's libretto is based on Estonian folklore, specifically a tale of a kratt (sometimes translated as "goblin" or "treasure carrier"), a magical being created from old household items that serves its master by stealing wealth. However, the kratt's relentless pursuit of riches and its master's inability to provide it with impossible tasks ultimately leads to destructive consequences.

The ballet premiered in Tallinn, Estonia, in 1944, during the German occupation of Estonia in World War II. Lydia Georgijeva was the choreographer for the original production.

Kratt's narrative revolves around a poor peasant who, desperate for wealth, makes a pact with the devil to create a kratt. While the kratt initially brings him riches, it soon demands more and more impossible tasks. When the peasant can no longer satisfy the kratt's demands, it turns on him and destroys his property. Ultimately, the ballet explores themes of greed, the destructive nature of unchecked ambition, and the dangers of making deals with malevolent forces.

The music is characteristic of Tubin's style, blending elements of Estonian folk music with modernist techniques. It is highly dramatic and evocative, reflecting the dark and fantastical elements of the story. The ballet features significant roles for the peasant, the kratt, and other villagers, providing opportunities for both dramatic and technical virtuosity.

Kratt remains a popular and frequently performed work in Estonia and has been staged internationally, solidifying its place in the ballet repertoire.
