Antoine Galland (1763–1851)
Antoine Galland (1763–1851) was a French orientalist and antiquarian. He is not to be confused with the earlier and more famous Antoine Galland (1646-1715), known primarily for his translation of One Thousand and One Nights.
The younger Antoine Galland (1763–1851) served as the curator of the Cabinet des Medailles (now part of the Bibliothèque nationale de France), where he specialized in ancient coins and medals. He was a noted scholar of numismatics and classical antiquity. His work focused on the classification and study of ancient currencies, contributing to the understanding of economic and historical conditions of past civilizations. While his namesake is significantly more well-known, Antoine Galland (1763–1851) made important contributions to the field of numismatics in his own right.
