James Hayter (actor)

James Hayter (23 April 1907 – 27 March 1983) was a British character actor, best known for his roles in numerous British films and television productions.

Born in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, British India, Hayter was educated at Dollar Academy in Scotland. He began his acting career on the stage and later transitioned to film, making his debut in 1936.

Hayter built a career playing jovial, often portly, and distinctly British characters. His roles spanned a wide range of genres, from comedies to dramas. He was particularly recognized for his appearances in films such as Nicholas Nickleby (1947), The Pickwick Papers (1952), The Million Pound Note (1954), The 39 Steps (1959), and Oliver! (1968), where he played Mr. Sowerberry.

His television credits include appearances in series such as The Adventures of Robin Hood, Dixon of Dock Green, and Dad's Army.

Hayter's distinctive voice and screen presence made him a memorable figure in British entertainment. He continued to act until shortly before his death in 1983.
