Ink Dish

An ink dish (also known as an ink palette or ink well, though sometimes the term "ink well" refers to a covered container) is a small, often ceramic or stone, receptacle used in East Asian calligraphy and painting for holding and preparing ink. Traditionally, solid inksticks are ground against the surface of the ink dish with a small amount of water to produce liquid ink. The fineness and quality of the ink dish's grinding surface directly impacts the quality of the ink produced.

Ink dishes are typically shallow and may have a variety of shapes, including circular, rectangular, or more elaborate forms that reflect the artist's personal taste or are associated with auspicious symbols. The material from which the dish is made can significantly influence the grinding process; for example, certain types of stone are prized for their ability to produce a fine, smooth ink.

Beyond its functional purpose, the ink dish is often considered an important aesthetic object in its own right. Antique ink dishes are highly collectible and are often valued for their craftsmanship, historical significance, and the beauty of their design. The care and maintenance of an ink dish is also considered part of the artistic practice.
