John Ford (Royal Navy officer)

John Ford (fl. 1756-1796) was a Royal Navy officer who rose to the rank of Rear-Admiral. His career spanned the latter half of the 18th century and included service in several significant naval conflicts.

Ford's early career details are sparse, but he is known to have been a Lieutenant by 1756. He distinguished himself throughout his naval service, earning promotions and commands. In 1779, Ford commanded the fireship HMS Infernal during the inconclusive Battle of Grenada against the French fleet under the Comte d'Estaing. He was mentioned favorably in dispatches following this action.

Later in his career, Ford commanded various ships of the line. He captained HMS Invincible, a 74-gun ship, during the Anglo-Spanish War. He was also given command of HMS Egmont and participated in fleet actions.

Ford continued his service and steadily rose through the ranks. He was promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1795, marking the culmination of a long and distinguished naval career.
