Independence Day (Turkmenistan)

Independence Day in Turkmenistan (Turkmen: Garaşsyzlyk güni) is the main national holiday of Turkmenistan. It is celebrated annually on September 27th. The holiday commemorates Turkmenistan's declaration of independence from the Soviet Union on October 27, 1991, although the official celebration date was later moved to September 27th.

The holiday is marked by military parades in Ashgabat, the capital city, as well as concerts, cultural performances, and fireworks displays across the country. Special television and radio broadcasts are also aired, often featuring speeches from the President of Turkmenistan. Government employees and students typically participate in organized events.

Independence Day provides an opportunity to celebrate Turkmen national identity, culture, and achievements since gaining independence. It's a day for reflecting on the country's history and future aspirations.

The celebration is often characterized by a high degree of state control and nationalistic themes. Prior to his death, the celebrations under President Saparmurat Niyazov were particularly elaborate and personalized.
