Our Lady of the Sign (Novgorod)
Our Lady of the Sign (Novgorod), also known as the Znamenie (Russian: Знамение), is one of the most venerated icons of the Theotokos (Mother of God) in the Russian Orthodox Church. The icon depicts the Theotokos in the orans position (praying with outstretched hands) with the image of the Christ Child Emmanuel contained within a roundel on her chest. This representation symbolizes the Incarnation and Mary's role in bringing Christ into the world.
The specific Our Lady of the Sign (Novgorod) icon is associated with the city of Novgorod and the events of 1170. According to tradition, during a siege of Novgorod by Suzdalians, the icon was miraculously saved from being captured. When an arrow struck the icon, the Theotokos turned her face away from the attacking army and wept. This miracle instilled fear in the besiegers and inspired the defenders of Novgorod, leading to their victory.
Due to this miraculous intervention, the icon became a symbol of Novgorod's protection and independence. Copies of the Our Lady of the Sign icon are widespread throughout the Orthodox world, each considered a powerful intercessor. The feast day of Our Lady of the Sign is celebrated on November 27 (December 10 according to the Gregorian calendar). The icon is typically displayed prominently in churches and homes, serving as a reminder of divine protection and the power of prayer.
