Jarapa

A Jarapa is a type of coarse, brightly colored rug or blanket, traditionally handmade in the Alpujarra region of southern Spain, particularly in the provinces of Granada and Almería. Jarapas are typically woven from recycled fabric scraps and threads, often cotton or wool remnants from the textile industry. This recycling aspect makes them a sustainable and economical product.

The distinctive feature of a jarapa is its thick, uneven texture and its vibrant, often geometric, designs. The patterns can range from simple stripes and checks to more elaborate and abstract compositions. Traditionally, jarapas were used as bed coverings, wall hangings, floor rugs, or even horse blankets.

The production of jarapas is a traditional craft that has been passed down through generations of families in the Alpujarra. Although modern machine-made versions exist, authentic handmade jarapas are still valued for their unique character and the preservation of traditional craftsmanship. They are a popular souvenir and a symbol of the region's cultural heritage.
