Larry Smith (Canadian politician)

Larry Smith (born January 20, 1951) is a Canadian politician and former professional football player. He served as a Senator for Quebec from 2011 to 2021, appointed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Prior to his political career, Smith was a prominent figure in Canadian football. He played for the Montreal Alouettes and the Ottawa Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Following his playing career, he held executive positions within the CFL, including Commissioner from 1992 to 1997 and President and CEO of the Montreal Alouettes.

In the Senate, Smith was a member of the Conservative caucus. He served on various Senate committees, including those focused on national security and defence, and foreign affairs and international trade. He advocated for policies related to economic development and national unity. He was a vocal critic of certain government policies and initiatives.

Smith retired from the Senate on January 20, 2021, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.
