Zhao Leji
Zhao Leji (Chinese: 赵乐际; pinyin: Zhào Lèjì; born March 8, 1957) is a high-ranking Chinese politician and a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, China's top decision-making body. He currently serves as the Chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, making him the third-ranked official in the Communist Party of China (CPC) hierarchy.
Born in Xining, Qinghai province, Zhao is of Han ethnicity and holds a degree in Philosophy from Peking University. He began his career in Qinghai, working in the commerce and trade sector. He rose through the ranks to become Governor of Qinghai and later Party Secretary of Qinghai province.
From 2007 to 2012, Zhao served as the Party Secretary of Shaanxi province. In 2012, he was appointed as the head of the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China, responsible for personnel decisions and appointments within the Party.
In 2017, he was elevated to the Politburo Standing Committee and also became the Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the Party's anti-corruption body. As the head of the CCDI, he oversaw a wide-ranging anti-corruption campaign.
In March 2023, Zhao Leji succeeded Li Zhanshu as Chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee. His current responsibilities involve overseeing the legislative work of the NPC and representing China in international parliamentary forums.
