Lesiew

Lesiew (also sometimes spelled Leszy, Leshy, or Lisovyk) is a male woodland spirit in Slavic mythology. He is the protector of the forest and its creatures, analogous to the Green Man or a forest god.

Characteristics:

• Shape-shifting: Lesiew is believed to be able to change his shape, size, and even voice. He can appear as a tall, imposing figure, a diminutive being, or even an animal like a wolf or bear. His size is often said to correlate with the height of the trees around him.
• Guardianship: He is the guardian of the forest, its animals, and plants. Hunters and woodcutters often seek his favor to ensure success and avoid misfortune.
• Temperament: Lesiew's temperament is capricious. He can be benevolent to those who respect the forest, guiding them and helping them find their way. However, he can be mischievous and even dangerous to those who disrespect the forest, leading them astray, causing them to get lost, or even harming them.
• Appearance: When in human form, he is often described as having skin that resembles tree bark, eyes that glow green, and hair made of leaves or moss. He often wears clothing made of bark or animal skins. He is sometimes depicted as having no eyelashes or eyebrows.
• Powers: Besides shape-shifting, Lesiew is said to be able to control the weather within his domain, summon animals, and manipulate the forest environment. He is also believed to have the power to lead people astray and make them lose their way in the woods.

Interaction with Humans:

• Appeasing Lesiew: Hunters and forest workers often leave offerings, such as food or tobacco, to appease Lesiew and ensure his goodwill. They might also observe specific rituals and customs to show respect for the forest and its guardian.
• Getting Lost: If someone becomes lost in the woods, it is often attributed to the Lesiew leading them astray. To find their way back, they might try turning their clothes inside out, reversing their shoes, or cursing the Lesiew in hopes of disorienting him and finding their path.
• Friendship and Deals: In some stories, humans can form a bond with a Lesiew, often through a pact or agreement. These relationships can be beneficial but often come with a price or require adherence to specific rules.
