In Certain Circles (concerto)

"In Certain Circles" is a concerto for orchestra written by American composer Philip Glass in 2005. Commissioned by the Pacific Symphony, it is a single-movement work, lasting approximately 15 minutes. While Glass's minimalist style is evident, the concerto also showcases a lush orchestration and a more romantic sensibility than some of his earlier, more austere pieces.

The title, "In Certain Circles," is intentionally evocative but not directly programmatic. Glass has stated that it alludes to the interconnectedness of individuals and ideas within specific social or intellectual groups. The music reflects this concept through recurring motifs and melodic fragments that circulate and transform throughout the piece, passing between different sections of the orchestra. These musical ideas build upon each other, creating a sense of momentum and evolution.

The concerto is structured around a series of contrasting sections, each characterized by distinct textures and rhythmic patterns. Despite the absence of a traditional soloist, different instrumental groups are given opportunities to take on a prominent role, engaging in a dialogue that highlights the interplay between individual voices and the collective sound of the orchestra. Critics have noted the work's accessible harmonic language and its engaging rhythmic drive. It has become a relatively popular work in Glass's orchestral repertoire and is frequently performed by orchestras worldwide.
