Hiroshi Masuoka (rally driver)
Hiroshi Masuoka (増岡 浩, Masuoka Hiroshi, born March 13, 1960) is a Japanese rally driver, best known for his success in the Dakar Rally. He competed primarily in the motorcycle and later the car categories.
Masuoka began his Dakar Rally career in 1987 on a motorcycle. He later switched to cars and became a works driver for Mitsubishi, competing in the Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero Evolution. He achieved significant success, becoming the first Japanese driver to win the Dakar Rally in the car category, which he accomplished in 2002. He followed up this victory with another Dakar Rally win in 2003.
Beyond his Dakar victories, Masuoka was a consistent front-runner in the event, securing multiple podium finishes and stage wins. He is highly regarded for his skill, perseverance, and mechanical knowledge, which contributed significantly to Mitsubishi's success in rally raid events.
Following his active driving career, Masuoka has remained involved in motorsports, including roles in driver training and development. He is considered a significant figure in Japanese motorsport history and an icon of the Dakar Rally.
