Henry Edwards (1820–1897)

Henry Edwards (1820–1897) was an English-born American stage actor, entomologist, and collector.

Born in Ross, Herefordshire, England, on August 27, 1820, Edwards initially pursued a theatrical career in England before emigrating to Australia in 1853. He achieved considerable success as an actor and theater manager in Sydney, Australia. He travelled and performed extensively throughout the region.

In 1865, Edwards moved to California, where he continued his acting career. He became a prominent figure in the San Francisco theater scene, known for his versatility in a wide range of roles.

However, Edwards also developed a deep interest in entomology, particularly the study of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths). He amassed a significant collection of specimens, many of which he collected himself. His work contributed significantly to the understanding of North American Lepidoptera.

Edwards was a member of the California Academy of Sciences, and his extensive insect collection was donated to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City after his death. He authored numerous scientific papers and articles on entomology.

He died in New York City on June 9, 1897. His legacy lies in his dual contributions to the performing arts and the scientific study of insects.
