Harlaxton
Harlaxton is a village and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It is located approximately 4 miles (6 km) southwest of Grantham.
History:
The name "Harlaxton" is believed to derive from Old English, potentially meaning "Heorulf's farmstead" or "Heoruft's settlement." The village has a long history, documented in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Herlavestune."
Harlaxton Manor:
Harlaxton is most famous for Harlaxton Manor, a large Victorian country house built in the mid-19th century. The manor is renowned for its Jacobean and Gothic Revival architecture and is often used as a filming location for movies and television shows. Harlaxton Manor is currently owned and operated by the University of Evansville as its British campus, known as Harlaxton College. Students from the University of Evansville, as well as students from other universities, study at the college for a semester or year.
Community:
The village of Harlaxton, aside from the Manor and its college, is a relatively small rural community. Local amenities include a village hall, a church (St. Mary and St. Peter), and a public house.
Governance:
Harlaxton has a parish council. The village is part of the South Kesteven District Council and Lincolnshire County Council.
