HMS Papua

HMS Papua was a Royal Navy shore establishment that served as a naval base and training facility during the latter half of the 20th century. It was located in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

Established after Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975, HMS Papua provided support and logistical assistance to the Royal Navy ships operating in the region. The base also served as a training centre for personnel from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force's Maritime Element, fostering cooperation and skills development between the two navies. Its role was crucial in maintaining a British naval presence in the South Pacific and supporting regional security initiatives.

The establishment included various facilities necessary for its function, such as workshops, accommodation, communication centres, and administrative buildings. While not a traditional warship, its presence contributed to the Royal Navy's ability to operate effectively in the area.

Over time, as the Royal Navy's global presence evolved, the need for a permanent shore establishment in Papua New Guinea diminished. HMS Papua was eventually decommissioned and closed, with its functions being transferred or discontinued. The exact date of closure would require further specific historical records to pinpoint.
