Greg Abel
Greg Abel is a Canadian businessman and the current CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Energy and the designated successor to Warren Buffett as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.
Abel was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta in 1984.
He began his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers before joining CalEnergy, a geothermal energy company, in 1992. CalEnergy later became MidAmerican Energy and was eventually acquired by Berkshire Hathaway in 2000. Under Abel's leadership, MidAmerican Energy evolved into Berkshire Hathaway Energy, a diversified energy holding company with interests in renewable energy, natural gas, and utilities.
Abel became Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Energy in 2011 and Vice Chairman, Non-Insurance Operations of Berkshire Hathaway in 2018. In 2021, Warren Buffett publicly announced that Abel was his designated successor as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.
Abel is widely recognized for his operational expertise, strategic vision, and deep understanding of the energy sector. He is known for his disciplined approach to capital allocation and his commitment to long-term value creation. He currently resides in the United States.
