Gizmo5

Gizmo5, also known as Gizmo Project, was a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) application and service offered by Gizmo5, Inc. It allowed users to make and receive phone calls over the internet using a computer or mobile device.

Gizmo5 was notable for its interoperability with the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), enabling users to connect to other SIP-based VoIP providers and devices. This open standard approach distinguished it from some proprietary VoIP platforms.

The service offered features such as free calls to other Gizmo5 users, inexpensive international calls, voicemail, and instant messaging. Users could obtain a unique phone number associated with their Gizmo5 account, allowing them to receive incoming calls from traditional phone lines.

In November 2009, Google acquired Gizmo5, Inc. Following the acquisition, the Gizmo5 service was discontinued in April 2011. Some of the technology and talent from Gizmo5 were subsequently integrated into other Google products, most notably Google Voice.
