Krone (Danish coin)
The Krone (plural: Kroner) is the official currency of Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. The ISO 4217 currency code is DKK. It is subdivided into 100 øre.
The name "Krone" translates directly to "crown" in English. Historically, the Danish Krone, along with other Scandinavian currencies (Swedish Krona, Norwegian Krone, Icelandic Króna), were part of the Scandinavian Monetary Union, established in 1873. The Union effectively fixed exchange rates between these currencies. While the Union dissolved after World War I, all countries retained their respective "Krone/Krona" currency names.
The Danmarks Nationalbank is responsible for issuing banknotes and coins in Denmark. Greenland uses the Danish Krone as its official currency, although locally produced banknotes are sometimes available but are not legal tender outside of Greenland. The Faroe Islands also use the Danish Krone, but they issue their own distinct banknotes, which are legal tender in Denmark as well.
The Danish Krone is pegged to the Euro within the narrow band of ERM II (Exchange Rate Mechanism II). This aims to maintain stable exchange rates with the Eurozone.
