The Myth (TV series)
The Myth is a 2010 Chinese television series loosely based on the 2005 Hong Kong film of the same name. While sharing the same title and some core concepts, the TV series significantly expands upon the film's plot and characters, developing a more intricate storyline with greater historical context.
The series follows the story of Yi Xiaochuan, a modern-day photographer who accidentally stumbles upon a time machine and is transported back to the Qin Dynasty. There, he becomes entangled in historical events and falls in love with Princess Yushu, daughter of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. He adopts the identity of Meng Yi, a general in the Qin army, and becomes involved in political intrigue, military campaigns, and romantic relationships.
The narrative alternates between the past and the present. In the modern-day timeline, Xiaochuan's older brother, Yi Dachuan, searches for him while also uncovering the mysteries surrounding the ancient artifact that sent his brother to the past. This contemporary storyline allows for reflection on the historical events and explores the potential consequences of time travel.
The Myth incorporates elements of historical drama, fantasy, action, and romance. The series is notable for its use of computer-generated imagery to recreate historical settings and battle sequences. It also features a blend of Mandarin and Cantonese dialogue, reflecting the diverse cast and production team. The series garnered considerable popularity in China and other Asian countries upon its release.
