Isla Grande (Santurce)

Isla Grande is a historically significant area located within the Santurce district of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Originally an actual island separated from the mainland by bodies of water, land reclamation efforts have since connected it to the rest of Santurce.

The area is best known for the former Isla Grande Airport, officially named the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport (SIG). The airport, now a general aviation facility, played a crucial role in the development of air travel in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean region. Before the construction and expansion of Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, Isla Grande Airport served as the primary international airport for San Juan.

Beyond the airport, Isla Grande also encompasses a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas. Ongoing development projects are transforming parts of the area, aiming to modernize the infrastructure and attract new businesses and residents. The area is experiencing revitalization efforts that are changing its overall character.
