German submarine U-164 (1941)
U-164 was a German Type IXC U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. She was laid down on 27 May 1940 by the Deutsche Schiff- und Maschinenbau AG Werk Seebeck (Deschimag) yard at Bremen as yard number 1007, launched on 1 April 1941 and commissioned on 15 September 1941 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Eberhard Preuss.
U-164 conducted five war patrols, primarily in the Atlantic Ocean, targeting Allied shipping. She sank seven ships totaling 43,429 gross register tons (GRT) and damaged one other of 7,176 GRT. Her first patrol began in December 1941, taking her to the waters off the eastern coast of North America. Subsequent patrols took her to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.
On 6 July 1942, while operating in the Caribbean Sea, U-164 was sunk by a United States Navy PB4Y-1 Liberator aircraft of VP-94. The U-boat was located approximately 150 nautical miles (280 km; 170 mi) north of Tobago. All 54 members of her crew perished.
