Gashora
Gashora is a town located in the Bugesera District of the Eastern Province of Rwanda. It is situated in the southeastern part of the country, relatively close to the border with Burundi.
Historically, Gashora and the surrounding region have been important agricultural areas. The Bugesera District is known for its relatively dry climate and fertile soil, which supports the cultivation of crops like beans, maize, and bananas.
In recent years, Gashora has become increasingly known for the Gashora Girls Academy of Science and Technology (GGAST), a secondary school for girls that emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. This academy has gained national and international recognition for its commitment to empowering young women through education.
The town serves as a local commercial center for the surrounding rural communities. Basic services and markets are available, supporting the daily needs of residents. The population of Gashora and the surrounding area is largely rural, with many people engaged in farming and small-scale trading.
The infrastructure in Gashora, like much of rural Rwanda, has seen improvement in recent years, with better roads and increased access to electricity and water. However, challenges related to poverty, healthcare, and education persist. Ongoing development initiatives are aimed at improving the quality of life for the residents of Gashora and the wider Bugesera District.
