Zanderij
Zanderij is a town and resort located in the Para District of Suriname, South America. Primarily known for the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (also commonly referred to as Zanderij International Airport), it serves as the primary air gateway to Suriname. The town's name, "Zanderij," translates to "sand mine" in Dutch, reflecting the sandy soil composition of the region.
Zanderij is situated in the interior of Suriname, south of the capital city of Paramaribo. Beyond the airport, the area is characterized by its savannah environment, with significant areas of white sand and sparse vegetation. The Surinamese interior, including the Zanderij region, is also known for its biodiversity.
Economically, Zanderij is closely tied to the airport and related tourism and service industries. The area provides employment opportunities for local residents in areas such as airport operations, hospitality, and transportation.
In addition to its functional role as an airport town, Zanderij also offers opportunities for eco-tourism. Visitors can explore the nearby rainforests and savannas, often as part of guided tours. Various lodges and resorts cater to tourists seeking to experience the natural beauty of the Surinamese interior.
