2015 Liberal Democratic Party (Japan) presidential election
The 2015 Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) presidential election was held on September 8, 2015, to elect the President of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan. The incumbent president, Shinzō Abe, was eligible for re-election, and faced no challengers, thus winning the election unopposed.
Abe's unopposed victory ensured his continued leadership of the LDP and, consequently, his position as Prime Minister of Japan. This election was seen as a vote of confidence in Abe's economic policies ("Abenomics") and his security agenda, which included controversial legislation to expand the role of the Self-Defense Forces.
The lack of a competitive election reflected Abe's strong grip on the party leadership and his perceived success in stabilizing the Japanese economy, although the efficacy and long-term effects of "Abenomics" continued to be debated. The election also highlighted the challenges faced by potential rivals within the LDP in garnering sufficient support to mount a credible challenge to Abe's leadership. The outcome solidified Abe's position to pursue his political agenda for the following three years.
