Frise (department)

Frise is a former department of the First French Republic and First French Empire in present-day Germany.

The department was created on January 14, 1811, during the Napoleonic Wars, from territory annexed to France. The territory comprised the western part of East Frisia, formerly belonging to Prussia. Its name derived from the historical region of Frisia.

The capital of the department was Jever.

The department was subdivided into four arrondissements: Jever, Esens, Aurich and Emden.

Following Napoleon's defeat in 1814, the department was dissolved and its territory returned to Prussia.
