Georg Ewald

Georg Ewald (1891-1963) was a German communist politician and trade unionist. He was a prominent figure in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), holding various leadership positions within the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and its affiliated organizations.

Born in Großschönau, Saxony, Ewald began his political activities in the socialist youth movement and later joined the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). During the Weimar Republic, he was actively involved in trade union organizing. He faced persecution and imprisonment during the Nazi regime for his political beliefs.

After World War II, Ewald played a key role in establishing the SED in the Soviet occupation zone. He served as a member of the Central Committee of the SED from 1946 until his death and held a seat in the Volkskammer, the GDR's parliament. Ewald held various positions related to economic planning and management, particularly in the agricultural sector. He advocated for the collectivization of agriculture in the GDR, playing a significant role in its implementation.

Ewald was awarded numerous state honors for his contributions to the development of the GDR. He remained a significant figure in the GDR’s political landscape until his death in 1963.
