Mubarizun

The Mubarizun (Arabic: مبارزون, meaning "duelers" or "champions") were a special unit in the early Islamic armies. They were champion warriors who would challenge enemy soldiers to single combat before the main battle began. The practice served several purposes: to demoralize the enemy, to test their strength, to allow for individual acts of bravery and skill, and potentially to avoid a full-scale engagement if the superior warrior could win a decisive victory.

The Mubarizun were typically heavily armed and armored, chosen for their exceptional combat abilities, courage, and often their lineage. Success in single combat brought honor and prestige, and a Mubariz's victory could significantly impact the morale of both sides. This tradition was prevalent in the early Arab conquests of the 7th and 8th centuries. Notable figures and battles in Islamic history frequently feature accounts of Mubarizun engagements. The selection process for Mubarizun was rigorous, emphasizing physical prowess, combat skills, and unwavering commitment. They played a vital role in establishing the psychological and tactical advantage of the early Islamic armies.
