Nederbeat

Nederbeat is a term used to describe the Dutch rock and pop music scene of the 1960s, particularly the period between 1964 and 1970. It was heavily influenced by the British beat boom, especially bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Characterized by energetic performances, often raw and unpolished recordings, and a strong emphasis on guitars and driving rhythms, Nederbeat distinguished itself from other European pop scenes of the time. Many Nederbeat bands achieved considerable success both in the Netherlands and internationally, paving the way for future generations of Dutch musicians. Key characteristics include simple song structures, often English lyrics, and a distinctive garage rock sound. Prominent Nederbeat bands include The Golden Earrings (later known as Golden Earring), Shocking Blue, The Outsiders, and Cuby + Blizzards. The movement contributed significantly to the development of rock and pop music in the Netherlands and is considered an important part of Dutch cultural history.
