Frederik Willem van Eeden (botanist)

Frederik Willem van Eeden (1829 – 1901) was a Dutch botanist, known primarily for his work in popularizing botany and horticulture in the Netherlands. He was not to be confused with his son, Frederik van Eeden, the well-known author, psychiatrist, and social reformer.

Van Eeden's significant contribution was the creation and publication of "Flora Batava" (1869-1894), a comprehensive and beautifully illustrated botanical atlas of the Netherlands. This multi-volume work, co-authored with others, aimed to provide a complete and accessible guide to the Dutch flora for both professionals and amateur enthusiasts. "Flora Batava" included detailed descriptions and hand-colored plates of various plant species found in the Netherlands, significantly contributing to the understanding and appreciation of the country's botanical diversity. It remains a valuable resource for botanical research and historical studies of Dutch flora. Van Eeden also published other popular works on botany and gardening, aiming to educate the public and promote the cultivation of plants. He played a key role in fostering horticultural knowledge and practice within the Netherlands during the latter half of the 19th century.
