Zippy (mascot)
Zippy is the mascot of the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. Zippy is a kangaroo, specifically a female kangaroo, whose selection as the mascot dates back to 1953. The nickname "Zippers" was adopted by the university's football team in the 1920s, reportedly inspired by a rubber overshoe company based in Akron called B.F. Goodrich, which had marketed a zipper-fastened boot. Later, in the early 1950s, a student contest was held to officially name the university's mascot.
The name "Zippy" was chosen from a pool of entries and officially adopted in 1953. Zippy is recognized as one of the few female college mascots in the United States. The character is portrayed at athletic events and university functions, participating in cheers and interacting with fans. Zippy's image and likeness are used in university branding and merchandise.
Over the years, Zippy's appearance has undergone several revisions to modernize and refine the character's design. However, the core characteristics of a kangaroo representing the University of Akron have remained consistent. Zippy is a symbol of school spirit and pride for students, alumni, and the Akron community.
