James Murray (vicar apostolic of Cooktown)
James Murray (1828 - 1914) was an Irish Roman Catholic priest who served as the Vicar Apostolic of Cooktown in Queensland, Australia. Born in County Limerick, Ireland, he was ordained to the priesthood and later emigrated to Australia. In 1885, Cooktown was erected as a Vicariate Apostolic, and Murray was appointed its first Vicar Apostolic and Titular Bishop of Flaviopolis. He served in this role until his death in 1914, overseeing the spiritual and administrative needs of the Catholic population in the vast and sparsely populated region of northern Queensland. During his tenure, he was involved in establishing schools and churches to serve the Catholic community, and worked to foster relationships with the Indigenous population.
