Ben Stack

Ben Stack is a distinctive mountain in Sutherland, in the far northwest of Scotland. It is known for its isolated, steep-sided appearance and conical shape, rising prominently from the surrounding moorland.

Ben Stack is composed primarily of Lewisian gneiss, a very old metamorphic rock. Its relatively small size, compared to other Scottish mountains, belies its imposing presence in the landscape.

The ascent of Ben Stack is a popular hillwalking objective, offering panoramic views of the surrounding lochs, moors, and coastline, including the iconic Foinaven and Arkle mountains. The most common route involves a relatively straightforward, though sometimes steep, ascent from the A838 road.

The name "Ben Stack" is derived from the Gaelic "Beinn Stac," which translates to "stacked mountain" or "pinnacled mountain," a descriptive name that accurately reflects its shape.

Ben Stack's distinctive silhouette makes it a landmark visible from a considerable distance, and it has featured in numerous photographs and paintings of the Sutherland landscape.
