Life Guards (Sweden)
The Livgardet (Life Guards) is a combined infantry and cavalry regiment of the Swedish Armed Forces. It traces its origins back to 1521, making it one of the oldest military units in continuous service in the world.
The regiment's primary mission is the defense of Stockholm and the Swedish Royal Family, acting as a garrison unit in the capital. Its responsibilities include guarding the Royal Palace, Drottningholm Palace, and other royal residences. It also provides ceremonial duties such as royal guards, state visits, and other official events.
The Life Guards consist of several battalions, including both light infantry and mounted troops. The infantry battalions are trained for combat operations, while the mounted squadron maintains a historical connection to the regiment's cavalry origins and is primarily used for ceremonial purposes.
Historically, the Life Guards have participated in numerous Swedish wars. In modern times, they have also been involved in international peacekeeping operations.
The regiment's motto is Possunt nec Velle Negare, meaning "They cannot refuse if they want to." The unit maintains strong traditions and plays a significant role in the Swedish military and national identity. The regimental headquarters is located in Stockholm.
