Michael Sheehan (archbishop of Santa Fe)
Michael Sheehan (born July 9, 1939, Wichita, Kansas) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the Archbishop of Santa Fe from 1993 to 2014.
Sheehan was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Wichita on December 16, 1964. He served in various pastoral and administrative roles within the diocese before being appointed Bishop of Lubbock, Texas, on April 6, 1983. He was consecrated a bishop on June 17, 1983.
On April 6, 1993, Sheehan was appointed Archbishop of Santa Fe. During his tenure, he focused on issues such as Catholic education, vocations to the priesthood, and outreach to the Hispanic community. He was a vocal advocate for Catholic social teaching and engaged in public discourse on topics ranging from immigration reform to healthcare.
Sheehan reached the mandatory retirement age of 75 in 2014. Pope Francis accepted his resignation on April 27, 2014, and appointed John Charles Wester as his successor. He remains Archbishop Emeritus of Santa Fe.
