Fred Allen (rugby union)

Fred Allen (2 February 1920 – 28 April 2012) was a New Zealand rugby union player and coach. He is widely regarded as one of the most successful coaches in rugby history.

Allen played as a lock for Auckland and the All Blacks during the 1940s. He represented Auckland 46 times and played in 21 matches for the All Blacks, including six tests. However, his playing career was significantly impacted by World War II.

Following his playing career, Allen transitioned into coaching. He achieved legendary status as coach of the All Blacks from 1966 to 1968. During his tenure, the All Blacks were undefeated in 14 tests and 38 matches overall. His coaching was characterised by a strong emphasis on fitness, skill development, and tactical innovation. He also fostered a highly disciplined and professional environment within the team.

Allen's success as a coach revolutionized New Zealand rugby. He is credited with modernizing the game and establishing a new standard of excellence for the All Blacks. His influence continues to be felt in New Zealand rugby today. He was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2009.
