Progressive Party (Chile)
The Progressive Party (Spanish: Partido Progresista, PP) is a Chilean political party founded in 2012 by Marco Enríquez-Ominami after he left the Socialist Party of Chile.
The party's ideology is generally considered progressive and social-democratic, advocating for policies such as a new constitution through constituent assembly, free higher education, improved social security, and greater environmental protection. Enríquez-Ominami has consistently been the party's presidential candidate, running in the 2009 (as an independent), 2013, 2017, and 2021 presidential elections.
The party has historically faced challenges in gaining significant representation in the National Congress, often relying on alliances and pacts with other left-leaning parties to achieve electoral success. While the party has at times held seats in the Chamber of Deputies, its overall influence in Chilean politics has been more focused on shaping public discourse and advocating for specific policy platforms. The Progressive Party has been involved in various social movements and campaigns promoting its progressive agenda. Its future trajectory and electoral prospects remain subject to the shifting dynamics of Chilean politics.
