Shanda

Shanda, primarily used in Yiddish and sometimes in American English influenced by Yiddish, means shame or disgrace. It refers to something that is deeply embarrassing or dishonorable, bringing humiliation upon oneself, one's family, or community. The concept often carries a strong cultural weight, particularly within close-knit communities where reputation and social standing are highly valued. The severity of shanda can range from minor social faux pas to significant moral failings. The act causing shanda is often referred to as a shande (singular) or shandes (plural). The opposite of shanda could be considered koved, which means honor or respect.
