Epigeus (crater)

Epigeus is a lunar impact crater located on the near side of the Moon. It lies in the northeast quadrant, to the northeast of the prominent crater Cleomedes and southeast of the crater Tralles.

The crater is relatively unremarkable in appearance. Its rim is somewhat eroded and uneven, with smaller impacts along its edge, particularly on the eastern side. The inner walls slope gently down to a relatively flat interior floor that is marked only by a few tiny craterlets. There is no central peak.

Epigeus lies within the Mare Crisium basin, and is thought to be Imbrian in age. Its formation likely occurred after the Crisium Basin was filled with basaltic lava.
