Incendies

Incendies is a 2010 Canadian drama film directed by Denis Villeneuve, based on the play of the same name by Wajdi Mouawad. The film follows the journey of twins, Jeanne and Simon Marwan, as they navigate through their deceased mother Nawal's cryptic will.

The will contains two letters, one addressed to a father they believed was dead, and another to a brother they never knew existed. These letters task Jeanne and Simon with finding these family members, leading them to their mother's war-torn past in an unnamed Middle Eastern country (heavily implied to be Lebanon).

Through their investigation, Jeanne and Simon uncover the devastating truth about their mother's life, including her experiences with religious conflict, imprisonment, torture, and rape. The film explores themes of war, trauma, identity, family secrets, and the cyclical nature of violence. It depicts the lasting impact of conflict on individuals and families, and the difficult path towards understanding and reconciliation.

Incendies was critically acclaimed for its powerful storytelling, compelling performances, and Villeneuve's direction. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2011.
