BAP 100

BAP 100 refers to a type of bomb, specifically a general-purpose, air-dropped bomb developed by Russian and Soviet engineers. BAP stands for Bombа Aviatsionnaya Prozrachnaya (Бомба Авиационная Прозрачная), which translates to "Aviation Transparent Bomb." The "100" designates the nominal weight of the bomb in kilograms.

These bombs were designed with a transparent or translucent casing, typically made of glass or a similar brittle material. This unique construction allowed the bomb to be used for reconnaissance purposes. When dropped, the casing would shatter upon impact, releasing a payload of flash powder and potentially other illumination materials.

The primary function of the BAP 100 was to provide aerial illumination at night, allowing for the detection of ground targets, assessment of damage, or support for nighttime bombing raids. The bright flash created by the bomb's payload would briefly illuminate the area below, enabling visual observation or photographic reconnaissance. While sometimes considered an illuminating bomb, its explosive force, though limited, distinguishes it from purely flare-based illumination devices.

The BAP 100's use was most prominent during World War II and in subsequent conflicts involving the Soviet Union and its allies. Its relatively small size and simple construction made it a practical and widespread tool for nighttime operations.
