Ve people
The Ve people are an ethnic group primarily located in Grand Cape Mount County, Liberia. They are known for their distinctive Vai language, which is part of the Mande language family and is notable for possessing its own indigenous syllabary writing system, developed in the 19th century. The origin of the syllabary is attributed to Momolu Duwalu Bukele.
Historically, the Ve have been involved in agriculture, cultivating rice, cassava, and other crops. Trade has also been a significant part of their economy, facilitated by their proximity to the coast. The Ve society is traditionally organized around chieftaincies and family lineages.
Their culture is rich in oral traditions, including folktales, songs, and proverbs. The Vai syllabary has played a crucial role in preserving and transmitting their history and cultural knowledge. Despite facing challenges related to modernization and the influence of other languages and cultures, efforts are ongoing to preserve and promote the Vai language and writing system.
