Elphinstone baronets of Sowerby (1816)
The Elphinstone baronetcy, of Sowerby in the County of Cumberland, was a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 25 July 1816 for Howard Elphinstone, a distinguished military engineer and Lieutenant-General in the Royal Engineers.
The Elphinstone family was of Scottish origin, but Howard Elphinstone's father, John Elphinstone, settled in Madras, India, where Howard was born.
The second Baronet was a Member of Parliament for Hastings. The title became extinct on the death of the fourth Baronet in 1926.
