Don Dixon (musician)

Don Dixon (born December 13, 1950) is an American musician, record producer, and songwriter, primarily known for his work in the alternative and new wave genres. He emerged from the North Carolina music scene in the late 1970s as a member of the band Arrogance, a popular regional act.

Dixon established himself as a prominent producer in the 1980s, working with a variety of artists including R.E.M. (on their debut EP Chronic Town and first two albums, Murmur and Reckoning), The Smithereens, Marshall Crenshaw, Marti Jones (his wife), and Guadalcanal Diary. His production style often emphasized melodicism and songcraft.

In addition to his production work, Dixon has maintained a solo career, releasing a number of albums throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. His solo albums are characterized by their intelligent lyrics, catchy melodies, and a blend of rock, pop, and folk influences. Notable albums include Most of the Girls Like to Dance But Only Some of the Boys Will (1985), Romeo at Juilliard (1987), and The Invisible Man (1989).

Dixon continues to record and perform, and remains an influential figure in the independent music scene. His songwriting and production have garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated following.
