Earl Peel

The title of Earl Peel is a hereditary peerage in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1929 for William Peel, 2nd Viscount Peel, a prominent Conservative politician who had served as Secretary of State for India.

The Peel family has a long history of public service. William Peel (1867-1937), the 1st Earl, was the great-grandson of Sir Robert Peel, twice Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He was elevated to the peerage as Viscount Peel in 1912, before being made Earl Peel.

The current (3rd) Earl Peel is William James Robert Peel (born 1947). He succeeded his father in 1969. He served as Lord Chamberlain of the Household from 2006 to 2021, a senior position in the Royal Household.

The subsidiary titles associated with the Earldom are: Viscount Peel, of Sandy in the County of Bedford (created 1912); and Baron Peel, of Sandy in the County of Bedford (created 1929), all of which are in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The heir apparent to the earldom uses the courtesy title of Viscount Peel.
