Heuchera
Heuchera, commonly known as coral bells or alumroot, is a genus of herbaceous perennial plants in the family Saxifragaceae, native to North America. They are prized by gardeners for their attractive foliage, which comes in a wide range of colors including green, purple, red, bronze, and silver.
Description: Heucheras typically form a basal clump of rounded, lobed leaves. Leaf size varies greatly between cultivars, as does the intensity and pattern of coloration. Small, bell-shaped flowers are borne on slender, airy stalks above the foliage in late spring and summer. Flower colors range from white and pink to red and coral. The plants are generally low-growing, reaching heights of 6-18 inches (15-45 cm) depending on the variety, with flower stalks adding additional height.
Cultivation: Heucheras are relatively easy to grow, preferring well-drained soil and partial shade. They are adaptable to a variety of soil types but perform best in slightly acidic conditions. While some varieties can tolerate full sun, particularly in cooler climates, foliage color is generally more vibrant and the plants are healthier in partial shade. Regular watering is necessary, especially during dry periods. Heucheras are generally cold-hardy and can survive winters in many temperate climates. Propagation is typically done through division in spring or fall.
Uses: Heucheras are primarily used as ornamental plants in gardens and containers. Their colorful foliage provides long-lasting interest and can be used to add texture and contrast to borders, rock gardens, and woodland gardens. They are also popular choices for ground cover. Due to their attractive foliage, they are frequently used in mass plantings and container combinations. The flowers, while smaller than the foliage, attract hummingbirds.
Varieties: There are numerous cultivars of Heuchera available, varying in leaf color, size, and shape. Plant breeders have focused on developing new varieties with improved disease resistance, heat tolerance, and foliage color. Some popular cultivars include 'Palace Purple,' 'Lime Rickey,' and 'Obsidian.'
Pests and Diseases: Heucheras are generally resistant to most pests and diseases. However, they can be susceptible to crown rot, particularly in poorly drained soils. Vine weevil larvae can also be a problem, feeding on the roots of the plant. Good air circulation and proper watering practices can help prevent these problems.
