Vlaamperd

The Vlaamperd is a South African horse breed descended from horses brought to the country by Dutch settlers beginning in the 17th century. Its name literally translates to "Flemish horse" in Afrikaans, reflecting its ancestry. The breed developed through a combination of Friesian, Oldenburg, and other European breeds.

The Vlaamperd is known for its elegant appearance, characterized by a long, arched neck, powerful build, and often a predominantly black coat. They are typically used for riding, driving, and dressage. The breed has faced periods of decline and revival, with ongoing efforts to preserve its unique characteristics and ensure its continued existence. Preservation efforts are complicated by limited numbers and the presence of related breeds with similar origins. The Vlaamperd Breeders' Society of South Africa is the primary organization dedicated to the breed's conservation and registration.
